As we cross over into a new decade, here are some reminders from the prophet Elijah’s pivotal encounter in 1 Kings 19:9-16 about discerning God’s voice at the threshold of a new era:
Pause. God spoke when Elijah literally stopped running.
Position yourself. Elijah went inside a cave to standing on the mountain and then moved to the mouth of the cave before God rolled out the next steps that would define his future and affect the future of his people.
Ponder in peace apart from the noise. God didn’t speak in the big and noisy din but through the small and gentle whisper. Have a blast with New Year’s fireworks and football but afterward carve out a quiet place to hear God’s still small voice. Reflection enhances illumination.
Process perspective through prayer. Elijah gained a divine point of view through honest prayerful conversation not by going to others first, but to God. Let Him be the first one you go to on the first day of the first year of this brand new decade.
Plant your feet. Once you hear what you need to hear, take that first step to go where He wants you to go. The blessing comes when the going follows the knowing. Elijah did what God said and went from a depressing fear of death into breaking the appointment with death. Astounding. As you obey today he will more quickly establish your tomorrow.
